Beyond Your Comfort Zone: The Quiet Magic Of Trying Something New

As we grow older, first times become less frequent and we often settle into what feels familiar. Long gone are the days of primary and secondary education where we were constantly learning, loving or loathing physical education, sparking creativity in art class and finding community at break time.

Trying something new isn’t something we prioritise enough yet there’s a quiet magic in stepping out of your comfort zone and discovering an outlet that positively impacts both your mental and physical health.

There’s something out there for everyone, there really is, even you. The biggest challenge you have to overcome is letting go and taking that leap.

I’ve always been someone who shivered at the thought of going to the gym, despite wanted to become more active. I’d looked up local fitness classes and even made enquiries but never actually followed them through. Then, just a few months ago, that changed. A new Pilates studio was opening in town and it piqued my interest. It’s something I’d always wanted to try, but up until now there had never been anything available nearby.

Arriving on the open day for my first class, I felt equal parts excited and nervous. But there was comfort in knowing that everyone around me was in the same position, we were all beginners. This low-intensity exercise has been exactly what I’d been searching for. It’s been empowering unlocking and improving my posture and strength while also being surrounded by likeminded people. In stead of feeling intimidated in a large open gym, I’ve found a safe and welcoming space that allows me to practice controlled movements, core strength, and stability. More than that, it’s given me the confidence to try other new things.

I’ve spoken to friends who’ve found similar joy in new hobbies, one has found her perfect outlet in playing padel and another the relaxation in pottery painting. As adults we’re often reluctant to be beginners, held back by fear or the idea that we’re “too old” to start something new. We worry about embarrassing ourselves, but the truth is, everyone has to start somewhere and most people aren’t thinking about you nearly as much as you think they are.

Of course, trying something new doesn’t have to mean exercise. It could be as simple as taking yourself on a solo date, joining a local book club, or putting yourself out there online. It’s about finding what makes you feel happy and fulfilled, and making yourself a priority for once. And if you try something and it’s not for you, that’s okay but unless you take that leap, you’ll never know.

We often take life and the opportunities it offers for granted. The possibilities out there are endless, so why not give something new a go? You never know what might become your next obsession.
