From California Gurls releasing in 2010 to Woman’s World releasing in 2024, Katy Perry has kept her Katycats in close distance throughout her music career. From being our childhood hero to our current generation’s mother. I remember being 8 years old and being asked to dress as my biggest inspiration in school so I wore my blue wig, glittery leotard and tutu, inspired by the dancers in the California Gurls music video. Throughout Katy Perry’s years of being a star in the music industry her fans – the Katycats – have grown up with her, from being little girls to grown women.

The pop icon has stayed relevant throughout her career with the help of her tours, different aesthetics, theme changes and her most recent two year residency at Resorts World in Las Vegas. The fans have always questioned, “what will Katy do next?” as one era ends and the next is to begin. She is constantly reinventing herself between each album. For example, her hair is her biggest iconography, going from the Witness era with her blonde pixie cut to the Las Vegas residencies long black polly pocket ponytail.
I had the once in a lifetime opportunity to experience Katy Perry’s Las Vegas residency Play. Katycats from all over the world travelled to Las Vegas to support the music star and nothing compares to the feeling of being in the theatre with worldwide fans all there for the same reason: to support someone they all love. It gave me the opportunity to meet my internet friend of four years who is from Australia and we got to experience meeting Katy Perry together, which had always been our teenage dream. She created a safe space and brought us all together and I have made some lifelong friends from this experience.

Katy has always kept a strong relationship with her fans and includes them in whatever way she can. She showed her appreciation to her fans for their support through Covid-19 by hosting Zoom calls and livestreams for us to be involved in. During her residency she gave a fan the opportunity to join her on stage at each show for a dance off, during one of her songs. Katy Perry has shown how down to earth she is by always recognising and remembering her Katycats which has kept the close connection she has with us.
I can confidently speak for all the Katycats in saying we cannot wait for the upcoming era of her music. She is now a mother leading into this new era so we as fans are excited for the music to come and how being a mother will reflect in her music. The newly released single Woman’s World shows her rebuilt confidence in herself and is an empowering song to all women out there.

Our pop queen has had a strong comeback with this single after her four year break of releasing an album and kept her fans on their toes with her travelling the world hosting listening parties. Moving into this new era, the Katycats are looking forward to a new classic Katy Perry dance pop album, more promo and an upcoming world tour.
It takes someone special to create such a safe space for fans to be. Katy has brought a community of people together who now look at each other as family. I am so grateful and thankful to be a part of something so special.
