Since my childhood days, Barbie has held a significant place in my heart, shaping my imagination, fostering independence, instilling belief in my dreams, and fuelling my passion for fashion. I am fortunate to still have my Barbie dolls from childhood, and their bold fashion choices, vibrant color palettes and playfulness continue to shape my personal style.

Now as the eagerly anticipated Barbie Movie approaches its release, the adoration for this iconic figure, both within myself and society at large, has been reignited and inspired us to bring pink into a monotoned world. While the iconic doll has past negative influences concerning body image and ideologies, it is important to recognise that Barbie has evolved. Margot Robbie’s new generation and fresh perspective of Barbie has breathed new life into the beloved doll and brought a new trend to the fashion world, known as Barbie Core.

This fashion trend encapsulates the essence of Barbie’s high-fashion aesthetic, feminine allure, and the unmistakable vibrant pink hues, whilst focusing on gender and size inclusivity. The trend is a way of self-expression and celebration and I love that we are all embracing it in our own way. Whether that’s wearing ruffles or bows, embracing more is more, or simply adding a few pink accessories. The key is to have fun and be ourselves.
We are currently witnessing Margot Robbie embracing the trend in all her amazing press tour outfits. She is seen wearing life-size versions of the doll’s iconic looks from designers such as Versace, Valentino, Judith Leiber and Chanel. Not only Margot Robbie, but celebrities including Kim Kardashian, Lizzo and Anne Hathaway are also color blocking in pink. I anticipate this trend will be embraced throughout the remaining portion of the year, especially after the film is released next week.

In preparation for the film, I have crafted a wearable piece of art inspired by Margot Robbie portraying Barbie. Utilizing pink denim, I have personally hand-painted and designed various versions of “Aussie Barbie,” such as Koala Barbie, Cork Hat Barbie, and Life Saver Barbie. My intention is to capture the interest of both the renowned actress and the Barbie brand, with the ultimate goal of presenting this unique creation as a gift.
Vintage and present Barbie dolls continue to inspire me each day, serving as a gentle reminder that being true to myself and embracing my girly aesthetic is a beautiful and empowering journey.
