Fierce, fearless and definitely female

When people think of successful women, what or who do they think of? It is safe to say that everyone has a unique approach to this topic. We could be thinking about power, independence or success, but at the same time it crosses our minds how women are being objectified and treated poorly, especially young women and women of color. Misogyny and racism are two forms of serious discriminatory actions that need to be addressed. Today, we want to shine a light on two incredible women who – against all possible odds – have shown the world that even in the depths of hatred and misogyny, comes ultimate power and success.

Everyone has heard or read the name Meghan Markle at some point. She is one of the very few Americans to be married into the royal family as the wife of Prince Harry. Some might know her as “Rachel” from Suits or may know her as the mother to Archie and Lilibet. Meghan has made her voice heard everywhere, recently speaking up against issues regarding the lack of paid family leave. From a really young age she has deeply cared about women’s rights and is all about the protection of our fundamental rights. And her own life has not been easy. In early 2021, Meghan and Harry sat down with Oprah Winfrey to speak about their journey within the Royal Family, the seriousness of mental health and how their personal experiences affected them heavily. Even though it is an extremely sensitive topic, Meghan was able to find the courage to speak up. It was admirable and inspiring for many and it showed the pure strength she has inside her. She is what many would describe as one of a kind.

Another fierce woman who has made a stamp in history is Simone Biles. She is an incredibly successful and talented olympic gymnast with a total of 32 medals, being only 24 years old. That is an incredible achievement, don’t you think? She has broken many barriers and has proven that what seems impossible, can be possible. In 2018 she spoke up against harassment. Sadly many women across the world have to face being objectified and worse, simply because we have always been seen as ‘second best’. Many would agree that things need to change. Shortly after her experience regarding this crime, she personally designed and wore a teal coloured leotard that she stated was “meant to honor the survivors of harassment”.

By living her truth so loudly and by championing mental health, she is setting new standards of beauty, strength and resilience, breaking down today’s image-obsessed stereotypes and encouraging others to do the same

For many, Simone is a hero.

Whether you are in the sports industry, political industry, or other industries, as human beings, we are all entitled to respect and equality. We need to speak up and fight back. Most importantly we must remind ourselves that we are all fierce, fearless and – believe it or not – we are female too.
